Beetroot chutney
« on: August 11, 2011, 18:19 »
I have a recipe for beetroot and horseradish chutney but can't find any fresh horseradish anywhere.  Our local form shop sold it once, well didn't sell it so doesn't stock it any more.  I thought they used to sell grated horseradish in jars in the supermarket but it is all creamed.  Has anybody got any ideas please?

Have a look round your allotment site -- lots have it growing semi wild, not in anyone's plot  :)

It completely covers what could be let as a half plot (if they could get rid of it) on our site  ::)

I have found a plant growing in the wild  8)  You could always ask at your local allotments, or ask on Freecycle  :)

Learn to identify it correctly by it's leaves and you will notice it growing everywhere.

I see it all the time growing along road sides field corners and down public footpaths.

If you can't find any horseradish, I've made a lovely combination of pickled beetroot and mooli (Japanese radish) - obviously the mooli isn't as hot as horseradish, but it stays crunchy and gives a nice peppery contrast to the softer, sweeter beetroot.  The best way to prepare the beetroot is to bake it to retain the flavour and colour, and then peel it after it's cooked before proceeding with the pickling in the usual way.

There is a site that deals in Beetroot recipes only.
Can't recall the name ... most likely beetroot.com ?
Some very good stuff on there.
They have several chutney ones, one of which I have just tried.
