« on: August 13, 2011, 21:29 »
Hi can anybody help us??????. We are just starting out and we have found a wasp nest in the ground close to where we are building a compost heap. Should we just leave it to run its course? or have it treated? I would like to add i have a little girl 21 months who comes with us daily???   PLEASE what should i do?? ;)

It's always advised to treat nests after the wasps have gone to bed for the night; reduces the risk of being stung.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

So long as you can see what you're doing I don't see why not  :)

Given the rate that wasps' nests increas in size (and population), if you are going to treat it, I'm gald you are going to do this sooner rather than later, to reduce the chnaces of being bady stung  :)

Just don't ask my OH to help you!  We got some foam spray stuff from B&Q.  It said spray late evening or early morning, so next day at 11am   he sprays the hole, but of course most of the wasps were outside, trying to get back IN!

He tried again the next day and used the rest of the foam, but yesterday he wanted me to help him dig the compost heap out, and there were still quite a few down there flying around, and hundreds looking a bit tipsy coming out of the nest as we dug it out!

I was down there with my wasp spray I can tell you!  ::) ::)

I spoke to the man who runs our allotments this morning and he has said that the council who runs them is having pest control visit tomorrow to deal with a lot of other nest on site. So i have been down tonight to mark it for him. But i must say there was hardly any about today. But we find a lovely grass snake.  ;),   I would like to thank you for all of your replies.

Grass snake? Excellent!!

Lucky you.  :) Take care when digging over the compost heap as they often nest in there for warmth and protection.

(The only wild life on our site is foxes. Want to swap?)

Wasps are a pain but if you give them space they are rarely interested in humans (unless you're eating fruit or cakes or sweet drinks of salad or.....).

Foxes on the other hand appear to be very inquisitive creatures and are always very interested in anything they can play with, rip apart, dig up or over. They love chewing gloves, tree-ties and hats as well as plastic covers on cloches.

If only I could catch a few I'd swap 1:1 for the wasps.  ;)

My local council charged £40.30 to destroy a wasps nest on the facia board of my house. The result was almost instantaneous.
When I discovered another nest near my compost heap I decided to go it alone. I used a can of Rentokil Foam that claimed to contain enough foam to eliminate 3 large nests. I finished up with a heap of dead wasps outside the hole and stings on my right ear,arm and waist. Still lots of busy wasps.
I next used a can of DOFF spray as directed and after one spray at 06.00 and another at 21.30 all signs of Wasp life disappeared. Read the instructions carefully.
