Flowers are very much in the eye of the beholder
« on: June 04, 2011, 13:41 »
I adore california poppies (single ones), but I think the word poppy puts some people of them.  They are gorgeous.

I also love, geraniums (can't spell perlagoniums) marguerites, single calendula (english marigold), french marigold, busy lizzies, gailardia, osteospermums, lillies, pansies and violas and lobelia and babies breath (gysophillia or something like that).

There are probably some I have forgotten.
What do you love in the way of flowers?

I've always got to grow roses ( they must look old fashioned though).........and start planting them in every new garden I get  I treat myself to a couple of new ones most winters, and have already been looking at the brochures for this year  :nowink:
Then of course anything cottagey to plant around them :)

I'd love to grow White Arum lillies, but they've died on me both times I've tried :(

Roses everywhere for me too, even when I only had a small growing box in an apartment. Now I've also become addicted to hellebores, sweet peas, oriental poppies, liliums, daylilies in addition to my old favorites of marigolds, asters, pansies, sweet williams, delphiniums and foxgloves.

I love foxgloves and try to have 5 or 6 different kinds on the go.The wild ones seed everywhere and I like to let them get along with it if at all possible. They also cross pollinate and the white ones and the purple ones have soft pink kids.Lovely.

It might be easier for me to list the ones I don't like although I can't think of any at the moment.  I like anything that flowers and perfumed ones are even better.

Roses of course, particularly older scented varieties. I love wildflowers like blue cornflowers and red poppies and scattered a couple of packs of seeds in the garden this year. They are coming up but I haven't a clue what most of them are! I love cosmos and nasturtiums as they are so easy to grow and look so pretty scattered around the beds. Love geraniums as nothing seems to eat them and they look good. Sweet peas and freesias for the scent as much as the look.
My least favourites are the sort that look like they have been manicured and groomed to within an inch of their lives. Some dahlias look like that to me. Sort of not natural. I guess I don't like things to be too neat and tidy, a bit like my housework philosophy!

I like most flowers although cosmos are a special favourite. Love roses but can't seem to avoid them getting ravaged by blackspot.  :(

The one thing I can't stand in the garden is yellow except of course a few daffs in spring.
