Hedging
« on: December 02, 2013, 23:50 »
I am looking to renovate my rear garden which was sadly left by the previous owners in a state of neglect.

The garden is medium sized and reasonably lit from all sides.

I am looking to plant a hedge along one side as an additional boundary.
Also looking at a low hedge between the patio and grassed area by the house.

I'm thinking of buxus for the low hedge but any suggestions for the boundary fence and hedge tips in general?

There is another thread on hedging on here at the moment where I suggested Escallonia as it is evergreen, has flowers in summer, easily kept in hand by trimming to whatever height you want and you can take cuttings from parent plants to expand your stock if you can't afford a whole hedge-worth all at once. For a low hedge, there is also Lonicera nitida (not as nice or low-growing as Box but ok). There are several varieties of Box which differ in potential height and leaf colour. They don't like windy or poorly-drained sites though.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
