OK I'm not good with identifying plants and an old neighbour gave me a plant and I kept putting it in bigger and bigger pots. The last pot I had to cut off the plant because it would not come off and there was no soil left just roots so I created a raised bed in the back garden and put it in there.
It started life with one antenna but each year sees more, this year there are 15 of them. I would like to know what its common English name is if anyone can help. And perhaps how to look after it, although it appears to thrive on neglect :nowink: the way its growing it could take the whole garden over

That looks like a very beautiful agapanthus - lucky you :) Many struggle to get it flowering like that ;)

It appears to have a bad infestation of meercats !
Cannot help on that , best try the R.H.S ! :)

If you don't like him, I'm sure many people would happily rehome him.... :D
I believe they are quiet happy if root bound and flower well, so if squashed in a corner in full sun, that could be why he flowers so well. one in my Mum's garden was in a wooded planter, pot rotted away, roots exposed, never fed (I abandoned him) south facing and he growing and flowering like a triffid I am informed.
I saw a great one yesterday for sale, then I saw the price tag, it's still in the shop, I hasten to add.
Indeed a Agapanthus as already pointed out.

How beautiful, you lucky thing :D

I love Agapanthus and have a large group which has been growing happily for many years in a big pot.
You can also get them in white, they love a sunny position. Don't need to be split until they are really pot bound.
We find them quite hardy, having survived really cold Lincolnshire winters :)

OK Gang - especially those that wanted to plant one, the flowers have gone and the seed pods are forming and getting ready to drop off the plant - if any of you want to send me a SAE for seeds to try and grow one next year then PM me for my address.
-
They can take 2 or 3 years before they flower, and you need to sow them soon - but I'll have a go please :)
-
Ooh if only we hadn't had an offer on a new home accepted today I'd jump at the chance but I'll have enough to do. Can I preorder for next years seed harvest  pleease :D

Seeds are now well and truly dry and ready to package up to send out to anyone who wants to PM me for my address to send a SAE. I will also be putting some in the seed parcel when it gets on the road and reaches me.
