Is it too late to start off some more leeks?
« on: June 07, 2010, 21:47 »
I have got 2 sets of leeks about 30 in each but the OH has pointed out we could do with more.  Is it too late to start from seed?  I looked at buying plants and there are dearer per plant than it would cost to buy.
Time waits for no man and I can't wait for growth.

I'm not an expert, but I think it is a bit late for leeks now.  I'm very ale in planitng everything, but I wouldn't chance it myself.  You may get something pecncil sized, but no doubt someone more knowledgeable will be along soon!

I started some late last year.  They didn't grow huge but they were certainly as big as the tiny ones that cost a fortune in the supermarket.  Very nice griddled  :)

Get em stuck in. You'll get leeks but smaller ones and as granjan says they're really tasty. I have a fish box with 28 in following the first of the early spuds and I'll harvest them late july/early august as baby leeks.

I am sure there is a place near Lesmahagow that is selling winter hardy leeks for £2.50 for 50. That is all the details I can give you but they are very good.
Visit my website and view my potato blog and videos.

i sowed some last july for a trial and put them in in september ,just finished cropping them last week ,they werent as big a usual leeks but were tasty .They may only have been smaller because of the hard winter ,but  give it a go it might be ok
