Title: Too much food?
Post by: Evansent on October 23, 2008, 20:22
Hi All,

Is it possible to over feed chickens? I have been saving up my kitchen scraps each day and giving them these as they go to bed, as a treat for being good girlies and putting themselves inside.

It usually consists of bread crusts, veg and fruit peelings and sometimes pasta or rice.

They have their layers pellets and the occassional handful of corn through the day as well.

Thanks
C X

Yes and no I suppose is the easy answer    from what I've read they can only eat about as much as their crop will hold, but some foods are a lot fattier than others so make sure they don't get too many scraps, a better alternative would be a handful of corn to 4 birds about 1/2 hr before bedtime.

Over weight hens lay less eggs & can suffer from associated health problems like prolapse
