Title: Taking a ride on mum
Post by: carolbriar on July 01, 2012, 18:19
I have a two week old chick which my broody hatched from eggs I bought in and she has taken to sitting on her mothers back and having a ride.  Is this unusual?  I hope she is a she (welsummer) - the breeder thought she was. She is a first hatch for me and sadly the only survivor from the hatch.

perfectly normal behaviour - mums make excellent taxis  :)

Thanks Joyfull.  I thought it was so cute seeing the chick taking a ride.  I thought my broody might make an awful mother but she is doing very well so far!  She was teaching the chick to dust bath today.  :)

Thanks Jo57.  Mum is a buff rock.  She was broody for 3 weeks before we put the eggs under her (last year she was broody for 8 weeks) so we risked it and thankfully it was alright.  The poor thing has now started moulting!

In my limited knowledge, I would say that the chick is a girl!  The markings are more clear than they are on the boys, which look a bit fuzzy!!!   fingers crossed.

That is so cute though!

but sadly that isn't always the case - remember my 2 that we were convinced were girls owing to those markings - and they were boys  :(?

Oh yeah, forgot about those 2!  But my 2 little ones were girls and the little boy was definitely fuzzier!!!

Grannieannie that sounds more hopeful!  I'll keep my fingers crossed.  Mind you, if it was a welsummer rooster they are gorgeous!  That would mean I would be forced to get a couple of wives for him :) I only have 4 hens and the chick but a very large enclosure so have plenty of room :D

It does look like a Welsummer female.  My bantams were quite easy to sex apart from one and that even turned out to be a girl (2 boys and 4 girls).  Some pictures on here in case you want to compare with mine.

Hi ANHBUC, your chicks were adorable, did you keep any of them?    I wish I had more but sadly it didn't turn out that way.  I think it is a girl.  I got the eggs from a breeder who has a variety of different breeds and I sent him a picture of the chick and he thought it was a girl so I am hopeful.  No matter what it is I am enjoying having a chick and watching the way it progresses further each day and how quickly its growing.   :)

I have 2 girls left, will be keeping one for definate.  That will be two if I don't find the other a suitable home.  They are beautiful birds and I am looking forward to dark brown eggs.   :)
