suggestions for gravel edging
« on: August 18, 2015, 21:02 »
Hi everyone,

I've got an area of gravel at the back of the garden - where it is too shady for grass to grow. It's looking scruffy now, so I want to get a fresh load of gravel to top up with. But I need something to separate it from the lawn - any good suggestions? Ideally, I want a rounded corner as it will look better than a right angle one. Also, I can't afford to spend too much. Had a look at some of the garden centres but there wasn't much choice.
Thanks!

Avoid the plastic edging as it degrades in sunlight.

What about those log rolls?

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Those little rolls of cut and waterproofed wood are good for quite a few years. They are laid out flat and then stapled along some lengths of wire so you will need wirecutters to chop the roll at the length you need. I believe they come in a variety of heights so you can decide how deep you want to sink them.

Eventually they will decompose away but you should get a good five to ten years at least before this happens then you can just yank them up and replace them with fresh.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've seen the log rolls in B&Q, but they were too tall for what I had in mind - I just want something a couple of inches tall really. Think I might go for plain wooden edging - probably cheapest option.

I used log roll for exactly the same thing. I found that once I put the gravel down there wasn't really very much of it visible, maybe a few inches and it looks really good.  :D

As Diddy says, once you top the gravel up the level will be higher than it is now and you will need something so it doesn't spill over the edges onto the lawn which your mower won't appreciate! Depending on the layout, log roll can be bent or curved as needed. Have a shop around for some decent log roll as, apart from it lasting longer, it should look better.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
