I have always grown them the old 'open goblet' fashion so you can pick from the inside too without getting spiked !
Getting that from your volunteer cordon will mean cutting the plant back close to the ground or getting it to spiral around a frame.

Never had a problem with kitchen towel tubes , they degrade fast after getting wet and are certainly not going to stop a Gladiator growing !

a pork hock cooked in the oven with carrots onion swede sliced potatoes and dumplings with gravy served with freshly cooked kale  lovely grub :D

we where given a funny looking cauliflower the other day they called it a Romanesco type cauliflower so as we haven't cooked this type of cauli before silly as it sounds do you cook this type of cauli the same as the normal  varieties  :unsure:

I volunteer with the National Trust  and they use chimney balloons on unused chimneys.  They are very good but occasionally fail (deflate).
