These are essentially draught excluders for the chimney.
The chimney balloon is plastic and inflated in place. The chimney sheep is made from wool and you just put it in place. But the sheep is more than twice the price of the balloon.
Does anyone have any experience of one or the other? I'd like to get something ...

Chimney balloons are excellent provided you don't ever intend to use your fire !!!!. There is a huge heat loss with open chimneys. I am not sure about the sheeps wool though. I think there are other sorts. Good luck, Mrs Bouquet

When I bought this place there was a plastic bin bag with scrunched up newspaper wedged up the chimney in the bedrooms. I would have left it there but for the incredibly loud noise made when water dripped down onto it.

I have just remembered that Dad stuffed all our chimneys with newspaper, it did the job. Mrs B

I volunteer with the National Trust and they use chimney balloons on unused chimneys. They are very good but occasionally fail (deflate).

That doesn't happen ith the newspapers, but it does make them difficult to read    Mrs B

When we moved here, there were four chimneys. One was for a smaller Rayburn, the others for the front rooms, and the main bedroom.
The only ones ever having seen a fire were the Rayburn and one front room! They're now - er - plastered over...
They all suffered from an unusual problem of 'bending' from the heat, and to be honest, I'm so glad we had them taken down some years ago, as the big one was right over our bedroom!
