Strawberry frenzy in the coop
« on: June 30, 2012, 06:09 »
Alphie, one of my little Serama boys, adores strawberries. I had a few the other night that were slug nibbled beyond saving, so was hand feeding him when OH wanders into the garden.  Alphie is very delicate with strawberries and prances about taking little bites, while chuck chucking his 2 girls over to get bits as well.

'Do the big gang like strawberries' OH asks.  'Yes' I say 'but chuck them in and run 'cos they go mental for them'.  OH strides to the big run and goes in.  He bends down to call the chucks over and they spot what he has in his hand

The other Serama boy Foggy sensibly leaps out of the way onto a perch, while OH disappears under a heap of feathers as 8 bantie girls of various shapes and sizes hurl themselves at him, beaks all aimed at those strawberries.  He emerged a couple of minutes later , pale and shakey.  'OK love' I say, while sniggering.  'Did they like them?'

'Like them! ....  Like them!'  OH says 'They were like a pack of starving hyenas ripping a wildebeast apart! '  Well I did warn him

after reading this I thought 'I wonder if mine would like some strawberries?'
Hah!!
Not likely.
As usual when I try them with something tasty they think I am trying to poison them!!  ???
they each took one taste and then wiped their beaks vigourously on the grass to get rid of the bits.
why do I bother    :nowink:
They don't seem to like any fresh fruit or veg at all. Are anyone elses hens as fussy as my three??
