Turkey died in my arms
« on: May 26, 2011, 17:06 »
Turkey suddenly became very quiet, she was usually very vocal, our early warning system for folk coming down the garden, even the dogs got to know her call.
She was under a rosebush at the end of the garden.  I went to find her, she came out and went straight to the hen house without honking at me.  I went to check on her and noticed her eyes looked kind of sunken into her face.  I put her beside the water and she drank loads, I gave her food but she would not eat.  I let her out and she stood with her wings hanging down, not looking at all good.  I put her in a run on her own, I didn't want the hens attacking her.  She was on the perch for about 30 min, I suddenly heard flapping, looked at her and she was dying.  We picked her up and she died in my arms.  We have buried her under the orange tree root where she used to lay her eggs, we have put some logs under the root to stop the hens digging up the soft soil.  The garden is very quiet now.  Turkey was around 2 years old.

She was a very lucky turkey, she escaped the oven twice!  So you gave her a good life Pamela, but I am a bit puzzled, as she wasn't one of the bred purely for meat white ones was she?  I would have thought she'd go on longer than one of those!

So sorry you lost her though!   :(

She was a black turkey, don't know the breed.  She was fine yesterday, she had been laying eggs every other day, we had the last egg a month ago.  She looked in good condition, no sign of anything wrong at all.   She just went very quiet this afternoon, that was the first sign.
We have lost our 'juans coming down the garden' early warning system.

I wonder if turkey caught an infection from the hens?  They had all just been worked.
My best memory of turkey was her chasing Jim around the garden, it was EU funny, she was really going for him
I think she suffered from the turkey equivalent of PMT!

Sorry to hear about Turkey. :( Maybe you should get geese now, for your Juan early warning system. :D

So sorry to hear about Turkey, Pamela. It sounds like she had a fabulous life with you. At least whatever took her was very quick.
A big hug on its way to you from la belle France.

Mary.
