How much space do hens need ?

Hi, Im new to the forums so apologise if this has been on befor.
Im battling with a neglected plot at the moment and would love to have 6 hens up there with me, but , how much space would they need ?
Got lots of "friends" already, hawks, Fox, Rats never a dull day :roll:

Hi Alan. Welcome aboard.

6 hens would need a house at least 3ftx2ft but more realistically about 3ftx4ft would be better for them.

The run (fox-secured) needs to be about 10sqmetres+.

The DEFRA minimum is 1sqmetre per bird but in practice they need more for a permanent run. Our 6 have about 3 or 4 sqmetres each and this seems too small at times.

Have to agree with Rob. giving them the most you can will makke them happier, keep an eye on the hawk
