replacement greenhouse glass
« on: March 02, 2009, 12:07 »
I managed to break a couple of panes of glass in my greenhouse. including a triangular corner one. These were horti glass. What is the best material to replace a small number of panes (I do not have the tools to cut glass myself). Can glass be got cut to size cheaply from a glazer, or is it better getting acrylic and cutting it myself?

My experience is that it's all expensive.   See if you can find replacement glass on e-bay or your local free cycle or gum tree to begin with.

We've been using a polycarbonate from Screwfix.  Polycarbonate is different to glass as it looks like it is made up from lots of square tubes stuck together so it give the impression of being double glazed.  So it won't look like glass in the frame.

It's recorded under replacement greenhouse glass on their website.  It's still quite expensive but you only need a straight edge and sharp Stanley knife to cut it.  It's impact resistant and lighter and easier to cut that acrylic.  Fight the urge to glue it in though.  It's still best to use clips but you need more of them than for glass.

Thanks; I was hoping for something that would look the same as the glass though.

Contact your local glass companies, even large ones will be happy to cut you some, whatever size or shape (take along a template for the odd shapes) 3mm is the standard thickness for greenhouses.

Keep the faith.

Any glazier will cut you a piece of glass, but i recommend you go to a small local company.
Take a cardboard template for shaped glass.
Standard glass is 4mm so i am not sure if it will go into the greenhouse if (as suggested) greenhouse glass is 3mm.
Toughened glass is more expensive and will probs have to be ordered in.
Some glaziers will also sell 4mm clear perspex.

Peter,
Could you tell me where you get your glass from please? I'm in Hull and having just got my first allotment, have inherited a greenhouse with a couple of broken panes.

Many Thanks,
Neal

i suppose i'me lucky that i acquired sheets of glass from different places and cut all my own glass i always keep my fingers crossed when we get very windy weather so far i have had to replace one pane it was unfortunately a corner pane

i bought a new glass cutter for £2.00 so by cutting my own it cuts cost quite a bit but if i was having to buy panes it would definitely be plastic  ;)
