Potting on Toms
« on: May 02, 2013, 14:56 »
Hi all,

Need to pot on my Toms which are now about 6-8 inches or so high. I've read you can plant them deep again to encourage additional/stronger roots so question is do I just plant the whole plant leaving a couple of inches of leaf showing or do I need to pinch out the side shoots to get the additional root growth?

Cheers,

Al

Plant up to the first set of leaves.  If you look carefully you will see lots of tiny hairs on the stem, these will turn into roots.

if they still have their seed leaves, you can take these off and plant up to the first true leaves.

Thanks Madcat, I was about to ask the very same question about how deep you can go with them.

Oh!! I don't think I've planted mine deep enough  :(  They'll need repotting again soonish - can I plant them deeper then?

That's rather leggy!

I'd go at least half way up that stem, if not more.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I would go up to the 4th true leaf on that one.

My tom seedlings are starting to get a jog on now, but the first sets of true leaves are turning yellow around the edges and shrivelling up. Some also have some "see through" spots on them. Would it be best to wait a bit longer, then nip off the affected leaves and replant deeper right up top where I've taken the leaves off? Some are also just getting yellowish splotches on them. Would a watering with some very dilute epsom salts solution help?

So that's what they are (thank goodness for that!)   ;)
