PFA -pink fir apple potato-do they store??
« on: September 27, 2011, 09:56 »
My PFA`s are coming up in abundance-can you store them OK or as they have fairly thin skins do you have to consume them like new potatoes.
No slug damage at the moment so i`m minded to leave them in the ground but the little beggars are sure to make a march on them at some stage--so eat them,-store them,- or leave them in the ground and take a chance?--advise sought with thanks.

They are maincrop and will store.

Don't be tempted to leave them in the ground. Dig them up, leave on top for a couple of days for the skin to harden before storing somewhere dark & cool. Knock excess soil off gently, but don't wash them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Out of interest, why do you say this? One of the old timers at our allotment suggested that they would be better left in the ground so that the skins were less thick when dug up and then boiled. We mainly roast ours, so it's a bit irrelevant, but we've got 15kg in a sack and maybe the same again still under the ground.

He's not wrong in saying the skins will be softer if left in.

That's why the slugs will get them if you do.

If you want to store them, they will store better with harder skins.

:)Thanks for the advice folks-they`ll be out of the ground in the next few hours-the stake marker i put in with the tubers is dated 2nd April-they`ve had long enough but it is a partial shade area! :nowink:

I grew some last year in tubs and stored them in a cardboard box in the shed, this then got covered up and forgot about for a couple of months then when i remembered we had them they were absolutely fine. Lovely spuds they are to.

:D Well they`re all dug and i`m pleased with the result for just 8 tubers-they are now having a rest in the sun before having a sort out tomorrow. I rather think that the highly amusing shaped ones will need stroring in a box rather than a sack to prevent snap-off damages-ouch! :nowink:.
