Which cherry tree should i grow?
« on: January 19, 2008, 21:55 »
Hi,

Which cherry tree should i grow?
I have a space in the front garden, quite sheltered, north side of the house, don't want anything too big. Love eating cherries, can anyone recommend a variety? Are they easy to grow, any special treatment needed? etc....

Thanks

Yes, they are dead easy to grow, only thing is to save fruit from birds, that IS the tricky bit. Stella and Cherokee (also has another name?) are brilliant performers. Check fruit tree nurseries for price, shapes and root stock for your space and pocket. :)

My next door neighbour has one which I am really pleased about because it keeps the birds of all my fruit.

I thought you needed two to get fruit...?

We think ther enormous tree in our garden is a cherry - no fruit though - will have to wait and see it in blossom to confirm diagnostic I guess.

No fruit may mean the birds have already got at them!  I have yet to get a harvest from my black cherries because the birds see the fruit ripening and at the red stage, they are all gone before you can say damn and blast it, those bl- blackbirds again.

You really should make sure you get the (semi) dwarf root stock as cherry trees grow very quickly and very big.  Even the semi-dwarf need to be trimmed back.

PS I think all cherries are self fertile.  Morello variety are definitely.

There are some, which are some which are not self-fertile bu why would anybody plant one of those up?

Any chance it's an ornamental cherry?

Lidl are going to be selling fruit trees from 25th January. Apple, Pear, Plum, and Cherry. They are only 3.99 each. Usually I wouldn't go for cheap stuff but mum got an apple tree about 5 years ago from lidl's and it is a great performer. I think I'm going to go for an apple a pear and a cherry. i love them all and cant decide and have a big thing out the back with grass growing on it that someone might describe as a garden. I may as ell make some use of it.
I don't have a drink problem. I drink, I get drunk, I pass out. No Problem.

Piccie please.  It might be a non-fruiter like gean or bird cherry or an ornamental as gobs suggests.

Must be an ornamental then.  It doesn't look like gean or bird cherry from these piccies.

Thanks for your advice.
I have had a look online and a lot of them seem to be gisele 5 root stock, not sure if this is semidwarf or not.
The £3.99 ones in Lidl would be more up my street. I may get a different fruit tree altogether, most of our apples were eaten by crows? (large, black, noisy) last summer so i don't think a cherry would stand much chance!
