Title: Which cherry tree should i grow?
Post by: sophiejo on January 19, 2008, 21:55
Hi,

Which cherry tree should i grow?
I have a space in the front garden, quite sheltered, north side of the house, don't want anything too big. Love eating cherries, can anyone recommend a variety? Are they easy to grow, any special treatment needed? etc....

Thanks

Yes, they are dead easy to grow, only thing is to save fruit from birds, that IS the tricky bit. Stella and Cherokee (also has another name?) are brilliant performers. Check fruit tree nurseries for price, shapes and root stock for your space and pocket. :)

My next door neighbour has one which I am really pleased about because it keeps the birds of all my fruit.

I thought you needed two to get fruit...?

We think ther enormous tree in our garden is a cherry - no fruit though - will have to wait and see it in blossom to confirm diagnostic I guess.

No fruit may mean the birds have already got at them!  I have yet to get a harvest from my black cherries because the birds see the fruit ripening and at the red stage, they are all gone before you can say damn and blast it, those bl- blackbirds again.

You really should make sure you get the (semi) dwarf root stock as cherry trees grow very quickly and very big.  Even the semi-dwarf need to be trimmed back.

PS I think all cherries are self fertile.  Morello variety are definitely.

There are some, which are some which are not self-fertile bu why would anybody plant one of those up?

Any chance it's an ornamental cherry?

Lidl are going to be selling fruit trees from 25th January. Apple, Pear, Plum, and Cherry. They are only 3.99 each. Usually I wouldn't go for cheap stuff but mum got an apple tree about 5 years ago from lidl's and it is a great performer. I think I'm going to go for an apple a pear and a cherry. i love them all and cant decide and have a big thing out the back with grass growing on it that someone might describe as a garden. I may as ell make some use of it.

Piccie please.  It might be a non-fruiter like gean or bird cherry or an ornamental as gobs suggests.

They all have blossom but you said no fruit.  When did you move in?

Must be an ornamental then.  It doesn't look like gean or bird cherry from these piccies.

Thanks for your advice.
I have had a look online and a lot of them seem to be gisele 5 root stock, not sure if this is semidwarf or not.
The £3.99 ones in Lidl would be more up my street. I may get a different fruit tree altogether, most of our apples were eaten by crows? (large, black, noisy) last summer so i don't think a cherry would stand much chance!

Gisela is semi-dwarfing. The birds are most likely to be blackbirds but the thing is, if the situation is that bad you shall not get any fruit unless you net them, and then might as well have what you fancy.

Ah, I forgot , very important though, 'north of the house' if it doesn't get much sunshine, sour cherry it is, which is a brill fruit. Go to how to grow it/wisy/ fruit index/sour cherry. 8)

Are we sure it is the same tree and you just moved the washing line?

I have a couple of reservations at the mo. Tree far away(?) and July you moved and don't think you should have seen any cherry blossom that time of year, might happen, that there are autumn fruiting cherries but I would not call it common by any means.

The birds are def crows, ravens or something similar! hope they don't attack my veggies, maybe they will eat the slugs?
We are new to the garden so not sure exactly how much sun the front gets. In July it had most of a day but at the mo it gets none (when the sun appears). How much sun do sweet cherries need approx?

Thanks for your advice

If you had a whole bunch of crows, they were rooks.
If you had only one rook, it was a crow.

If they were huge, they were ravens (doubtlessly, lost).
If they were small, they were jackdaws.
If they were small and not even nearly black, they were jays.

None of the above are very keen on fruit but will eat it.  Blackbirds love fruit.

This post is factual but perhaps not very helpful    :)

Just wanted to post something similar.

If there is sunshine in the summer as you describe, most hardy fruit should be OK, probably will need a fleece over the spring blossom if frosts are forecast.

Any other hardship added to that location would not be desired, ie. wind corridor, low lying ground(valley effect).

Thanks WG it was a helpful post.
I wish they were jays! They must be rooks, with some jackdaws thrown in (grey heads). They looked very large balanced on top of our apple trees last year. Our garden backs onto open countryside so there are large, noisy flocks of them.
I have posted in your sour cherry section, wasn't sure if it was the right place or not.

Thanks
