Gooseberries
« on: July 27, 2009, 13:18 »
Wotcha peeps

Among the goodies in this week's organic veg box delivery (can't grow it all myself) I found a small tub of small, red gooseberries - about 100g of them.

Anyone got any hints or recipes that will make use of 100g of sweet gooseberries, otherwise I'll just eat them like sweeties!
Veg? That's chips, innit?

I'd make a compote with them (sounds better than 'stewed gooseberries') and then use that with something else, depending on how many people will be eating them.

Put them in a saucepan over a low heat (add a tiny drop of water if they start sticking) with a lid on, stirring/shaking occasionally until they burst.  Take the lid off, add sugar to taste and simmer until the sugar's dissolved - longer if you want a thicker, jammier consistency and not long if you want the gooseberries to keep their shape a bit.

Goes very well with thick yoghurt (you can put alternate spoonfuls in a wine/cocktail glass if you want it to look posh), custard, sponge pudding, as a quick 'cheating' crumble under the grill, etc.

Or you could just eat them, of course! ;-)

Thanks HLS - I'll try that next time.

This time, I fortuitously noticed my Blueberry bush was in full fruit - for the first time in three years! - so I raided that and had enough for a small gooseberry and blueberry crumble.

Mmmm, summer pudding-tastic!  :tongue2:
