Allotment soil PH measurement (none chemical)
« on: March 26, 2012, 10:42 »
Can anybody on here recommend a reliable PH meter that is accurate and easy to use.

Thanks for any comments.

The two criteria are often competing.  The probes are easy to use but said to be more unreliable.  The test tubes are more reliable (if you take sufficient samples from round the plot) but are more faff.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I'd say the cheap probes are very unreliable. Never had an expensive one so can't say but the chemical ones are certainly more accurate.

If you want a cheap method buy some universal indicator strips (litmus paper) on ebay. Take your soil samples, dry them then grind to a powder and mix with distilled water or rainwater, shake well and dip the strip. It should be accurate to about 0.5.

The more samples you take over the plot the more reliable the result.

Thanks Yorkie and Solway, the cheap meters do have a poor feedback while the expensive meters have to be calibrated every so often so I think the chemical method may be the one for me.

Thanks for your input.
