This year I sowed all my carrots early in a tall big tub, mainly to keep them away from the badger; she loves carrots.
I sowed a lot for my use and to give away to non grower friends but found every one I pulled  has fly damage. I didn't cover them as I believed the tale about carrot fly only cruising a foot or so above the ground which I now know is false. So, short of covering the carrots next season, are there any tips on growing good healthy carrots?

Standard advice is to not thin them as this alerts the fly.
Other than that it’s covering with fine mesh as you say.
If uncovered I think growing strong smelling veg such as onions may confuse them.

We used to suffer badly with carrot fly, now we don't go near them once they are down and we haven't had any damage for a couple of years.
Broad cast scatter them, quick rake over the area and then go back at harvest time... Very annoying after all the love I used to give them
