Hi i had blight on my Christmas spuds around late August time .It takes hold very quickly turns the stalks/ leaves etc in to a stinking mush. I managed to save the tubers , Cut down the stalks and covered them with
black Plastic .Dug them up Christmas eve lovely. :o

By the way, why do you have to leave the potatoes in the ground for three weeks after cutting off the stalks?

the spores remain viable on the soil, so if you dig up straight away you run the chance of infecting the tubers. 10 days should be fine.

and another little tip if you have or get blight remove every last potato out of the soil even the little marble sized ones this is the main reason how blight stays in the soil from year to year
feed the soil not the plants
organicish

Thanks for all these tips. I suppose you can't put the stalks and leaves on the compost. What's to do. Burn them?

Anton

P.S. my new potatoes are delicious. They are called Eersteling, which is Flemish for earlies. They have a bright red skin that turns pink when cooked and the flesh is yellow. Gorgeous steamed and then mashed with olive oil and an egg on the top.
