Could be early blight ?
are your leaves yellowing with dark halo like splotches ?

All my mids have been hit by early blight, but earlies and main are happily growing away.

Memory tells me blight doesn't usually strike until July August time, unless the warm wet weather has bought it forward. I could be and probably are wrong on this

there are some yellow leafs on them yes, they are at the bottom but i put it down to not getting the light

from what i can see there a quite a few leafs with the brown "patches" on and some of them are curling up

the wind has given them a battering and most are laying down now, this may be why i can see the leafs more

Sometimes a spray with cheshunt compound will halt it, bordeaux mixture will also do, both contain copper compunds

Have a look at this link it may help identify it.

Also John has provided a info sheet about it with some recommendations on potato varietys. Here's a link to that.

I think i've got it too - very glad I dug up my earlies already. Seems very early for it - but weather has been freaky,

If the only yellow leaves are at the bottom then that is probably not blight, If all the other leaves are getting brown spots but the plants look ok then it may not be blight,if the brown spots start to appear on the stems as well then worry as with any signs of rot.It is a bit early though/Since you don`t know what type of pots you have then I suggestdigging out one plant to see what is there? If you are sure it`s blight then pull up the hallums by standing wi th feet on either sides of the stems to prevent the potatoes coming out then dig them out a week later as they may not be infected. You can tell if potatoes are blighted as they don`t store well, quickly smell and rot in large blackpatches.
Not all brown spots on leaves are blight though.

Annie,

ive dug one plant and there are some "new potato" sized ones under there, 5 to be exact that i could find! there 2 very small new growth ones coming from the seed.

they look great with no scab or slug dammage

BUT,

i have found black patches on the stems higher up in the plant

what should i do? if i cut off all the tops will that be it as regards to growing?

there is loads of people local giving me diffrent advice im just totaly  sutck!

I spoke about a similar problem on a different post. Yellow leaves, black around the edges and the stalks sooty. Just the one plant. I pulled up the plant and the potatoes seemed perfectly OK. But I now see the one next door is looking a bit "off colour". Should give them a spray with the copper mixture, as one person suggested? Or just eat them fairly quickly and give up any hopes of storing them. The ware potatoes are the ones affected, I should add. My early potatoes seem to be OK.
It is best to pull up the new potatoes or just consume them when necessary?

New to veg, sorry have been away for the weekend,It could be blackleg if the stems rot, brown splodges on the leaves and stem could be blight, blackleg occurs in prolonged wet weather, blight in damp warmish weather!
My potatoes were all fine on friday,I looked at them just now and the row of kestral has large wet brown splodges on the leaves, some lower leaves have gone yellow as well so it`s definatly the start of blight.I`m going to remove the hallums when the rain eases up and will dig up all the earlies now instead of leaving them, what fun a house full of wet/soaked camping gear and potatoes!

thanks for replying

i cut all the tops off of mine today but they have seed pods so been told they are ready to dig now anyway.

i dug a couple the other day and they looked and tasted great, scraped much better than anything we have had from a supermarket this year

does blight just cause problems with storing or will it rot them in the ground? thats the last thing im realy interested in finding out so i know if i can dig as i want them or if i need to get them all out asap

thanks again

A lot of the advice says to leave in the ground for a few weeks once infected folliage has been removed. If the tubers aren`t infected then they should store OK just check regularly for brown spots that go hard or rot,I`ve only hada problem once and if they rot they go quickly to mush.Sounds as if you may have got them in time, fingers crossed
