problem with potatoes
« on: May 30, 2009, 13:16 »
Hi fellow allotmeteers! I have just returned from my allotment totally discoraged. My potatoes of which there are 6 varieties, all certified, although still green, have curled up. On digging an early one up it has produced no new potatoes, the original seed potato is firm and there is no smell. Surounding allotments fine. Any ideas?

Good evening Jan and welcome. I assume that when you say they have curled up you are talking about the leaves. This happens from time to time, don`t worry about it you should still get a crop.Just don`t keep pulling them up to see what`s happening. :D  :D

Hi Janmacca and welcome to the site

Do you have a piccie - is it, as David asked, the foliage which is curled?

I'll pop this thread over to Grow Your Own, as it's about growing your own!

Feel free to tell us more about yourself in a new Welcome thread  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If your potatoes were tomatoes I would say they were growing really well.... when this happens to tomatoes it is usually because the soil has a high fertility level.

Did you add manure soon before planting?

I certainly would not dig up any more.... If there's no sign of ay other problems and the leaves are green then leave them and wait. You may well get a really good crop!!  ;)
