Flower Advice needed...
« on: March 26, 2010, 22:29 »
I have thought i would like to give about 6sqM of my plot over to growing some flowers. I think it would be really nice to take  them home to my wife over summer, so the type you can cut and take home are the ones i would  like. Ive actually been thinking of growing some flowers for a week or two now and im actually quite excited about learning all about it.

So tomorrow my plans are to go to the garden centre and buy what i need.

Problem is i never grown any flowers before (apart from marigolds nr my carrots) and dont know what flowers are ideal. I would like to try grow some Dahlias tho, they are cut and take home ones arnt they?

So any names of flowers i should be looking for would be great or any advice really......

Cheers MW.

I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Zinnias make great cut flowers, as do easy to grow cosmos, calendulas and asters. Gypsophilia is a fluffy type of filler flower that's dead easy to grow from seed. Mums are great but easier if you buy started plants, same with rudbeckias (black eyed susans) and coneflower (echinacea). Dahlias are started from tubers which should be potted now. And don't forget gorgeous sweet peas for scent (another super easy grower if you start seed now indoors). You could also surprise her with a few lilies if you plant out a few bulbs asap and they'll flower this year.

Planted a week ago and now all up, soon be ready for their own little pots :D

Don't know where they are all going though  I didn't expect that many to come up
I suppose the extras could go to the school bazaar

Masses and masses, but you need to keep dead heading them to get decent stalks. We have had the peaches one for 4 year, it's been split and moved and left in the ground over winter and still comes back strongly. Same with pompoms of different shades. Don't know if they'll come up after the winter we've just had though. Don't forget sweet peas, again you have to pick them often, but worth it for the scent and insects.

You just need to remove the ones that you don't take home when they shrivel. You get better flowers for longer. Purists would tell you to thin the buds to get bigger flowers but that is not necessary, you will have plenty. Just remember that they are rather hungry and thirsty, so a feed every so often will help, and some water if we have a prolonged dry spell.....not very likely!
