Pekins
« on: March 31, 2011, 22:35 »
I have been looking for Orpington Banties preferably Blue. Have tried locally and down where hubby is working.  No joy, but today I found Gold lace Orpingtons.  Checked the site and they have Lavender Pekins.  Have been looking at them and the are gorgeous but am a bit worried about the feathered feet.  Do they cause much trouble? One of the things I love is the way the chickies curl their toes round your fingers (just like a baby's, God I am sad    ).

Feathered feed can be a bit of a pain in the winter, especially if the run gest muddy.  My two sabelpoots had mudsicles a few times (which bathed off without any problems).  You also have to watch for mud forming balls between the toes or under the toe pads; but unless you are planning to show, then feathered feet aren't too much of a problem.

Pekins are seriously cute with their bustles, and they come in about a hundred different colours!

Just want another couple of pretty birds for the garden.  Just discovered the Secretary of the Scottish Pekin Club lives a few miles away  :D Now isn't that handy, but if Iget in touch with him, I wont get my Orpie.  Mmmm decisions, decisions

There's not too much difference in size between banti orps and pekins ;)

theres quite a difference in proper pekins and banty orps.  Trouble is these days there's too many big pekins around through bad breeding.

The size isn't really a problem.  I really like pretty fluffy birds. How do you know if they have scaley leg if they are covered in feathers?

Well, local guy only has Black and White Orpies and the only person he could put me in touch with is in Orkney! I draw the line at getting on ferrries.  So, think am back to the ones down south.  Do you think a 7/8 hr drive is too much?  Really, don't want them to be totally stressed and ill.  :(
