Mini Calabrese
« on: January 27, 2012, 12:21 »
Anyone had much experience of mini Calabrese such as these HERE ? Do they taste like the normal stuff?  Any more problematic to grow? Any varieties you'd recommend?

I only have 10x10m in total, meaning I can only spare 2.2x1.5m for Calabrese despite the fact it's pretty much the only cooked green I eat.  This makes the mini vareity look like it might solve my problem.

Edit to fix long link. :)

I have never grown this one. But you can get it cheaper here:

They should be rather straightforward, just smaller and you can pack them in.

As much as I'll recommend Moles, maybe 250 seed would be too much for the OP, and there is a minimum order of £7.50.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Lol! I never knew about this minimum order. I must always get carried away...

The seed lasts though, I realised he does not need that much this year and next.

I grew a variety called Sakura from Suttons last year. It had a small first head with quite a mild flavour, after about 12 weeks (which was late July for me - the packet said 10-12 weeks, though they are now saying 6 - 12 weeks on the website) but after that, the 8 plants  I had in the ground (12 inch apart) went mad producing sideshoots up until December, so I would say it was well worth the space. I also had some seedlings left over that I put into some of the larger Morrisons' flower buckets in MPC that did pretty well but not as well as in the ground.

Thanks for the replies, esp to plot103.  I'll definitely be checking out Sakura  :)
