Hubby has just come back from the lotty with a bag of pears. I haven't got a clue what to do with them and don't want them to go to waste.    Any ideas on how to store them, or cook with them gratefully received.  :D

If they are ripe/soft you will need to either eat them or cook them as soon as possible as they very quickly become over ripe and useless for much then.

If they are hard however you can store them like apples - cool and dark,, not touching - and then bring indoors the ones you want to ripen a couple of days before eating them

Hope that helps  :D

That was quick! Thank you :D

Looks like storing is the way to go, they all seem pretty hard. :)

You can poach them when they are hard, (they soften nicely then) or make pickled pears to bottle for the festive season too  :D

This year my pears have not been keeping as well as in previous years, however as my grand-kids love them and the pears have been really gorgeous there has been no waste.
Hope you enjoy them

I have been experimenting with storing apples and pears and find that a few kept in the fridge until they are needed works quite well. The ones on a slatted shelf in the garage also OK but as soon as I tried wrapping them up in boxes they went off very quickly.

As for cooking them I would Google for recipes - there are so many to choose from it would be hard to pick one out to recommend BUT if you ever need a pud in a hurry then a tub of stewed fruit in the freezer makes a great standby as can be used for fruit crumble and lots of other pies etc. I always have apple and pears in the freezer for this purpose. Just prepare the fruit and very lightly simmer with the required amount of sugar until just cooked but not too squashy and then when completely cold store in plastic tubs or freezer bags. I also make up large batches of the crumble topping and freeze that as well in usable amounts. That way I have an instant pudding....happy days  :)

The trouble is pears seem to go off from the inside.  Quite often I've cut open a pear and found the centre is a tad mushy,  still eat the exterior though.

I have poached pears in home made red wine, popped in jars and steralised in boiling water.   Luverly as a base to microwave sponge pudding.     Cheers,     Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !
