Hi,
Has anyone any advice on how to prevent condensation from ruining my shed stored onions? I have them strung and hanging in my shed and when I go to check on them they’re always wet with condensation. I tried covering them with hessian sacks and towels to see if this helps but they’re still damp, and I’ve already lost a few to mold. I will be grateful for any suggestions

Welcome to the forums :D
Condensation is usually due to changes in temperature. Is there anything else which is raising the humidity levels in the shed?
Has this always happened, or is it something new this year?

Thanks for the welcome,
Yes, warmer days and cold nights seem to cause the condensation, it happens every year usually end up bringing them home, the trouble is where the shed is too cold the house is too warm and they start sprouting! Maybe insulating the shed will help?

Is it a wooden shed? That does sound quite extreme already, and you've tried basic insulation with the hessian etc.
I don't suppose you have a garage, or a cooler under-stairs cupboard?

Hmm, what a nuisance, what about the loft, at our old house I regularly kept them up there tied up to the rafters in legs of tights with a knot in between each onion so I could just chop off a few to bring them down, but we had a loft ladder so it wasn’t too onerous to get them.

onions should be stored in the light. single layer and checked occasionly
thicker stem ones should be used or cut up and frozen.
