i am new to this, do i need to cover seeds at the start when i sown them, and do i put the seeds in water over night please, flowers and veg seeds

Are they seeds that you have bought?   If they are there will be instructions on the back of the packet to tell you how to sow them.

Each plant has different requirements for seed sowing, although often the bigger seeds need to be deeper than the small ones.  Most don't need to be soaked overnight first before planting.  As others have said, look on the main website here, or at the seed packet, or google a seed company which sells that particular variety as they often provide growing advice.

The only seeds you may have to soak overnight are ones with a hard coating such as sweet peas. Some people put them onto damp paper for a few days then gently remove those that have germinated because not all seeds will do so. Very tiny seeds are best emptied into a little poly bag containing a little bit of fine sand then the bag is shaken then the mix is sprinkled on top of a filled pot or tray and gently firmed in with no added soil on top. This means that the seeds are distributed far better so you don't get a big clump of seedlings to separate out; also it reduces the chance of damping-off.
