What do you put in the buckets? I am assuming it's not just compost? If you mix in other things, how much of each do you add?

i'm thinking of doing this myself, so any tips will be gratefully recieved. :D

Crocks in the bottom, then some gravel with compost on top. :)

I put mine in a large pot with bog standard compost, they germinated and then all rotted off, next time I will try with a 50/50 mix with sand and my own compost.

I used half new and half last year's spent compost and they seem fine

It may well be that I overwatered then, the sand may help as I tend to over rather than under water everything.

Very, very well rotted farmyard manure, the same as I used for the ones grown in the ground, for which I completely excavated the heavy clay "soil" in a rectangular block and replaced it with the composted dung.

I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

thanks again for all your replies, I have just come back from getting some compost and sharp sand. I will have some well rotted manure next year though, so will give that a go too. (eventually). :D

Don't have the soil too rich or the carrots will fork.
