I'm a total novice too, this year i'm attempting potatoes in a large tub.
Kale, spring onions, various salad leaves, late peas, herbs, carrots, purple sprouting broccoli, beetroot, radishes, shallots and garlic.

Hope that helps, prob forgotten must of the stuff lol but i'll let you know of theys any more.

Hi, I have a few pots around my allotment in spaces between the raised beds.  Currently have turnips, dwarf runner beans, radishes, mixed salad leaves and curly leaved cress.  All doing well!

Thanks for directing me here pottered.

If I was to get some pots, what shoudl I plant when? Is there a different season for potted growing, or can I follow the normal rules?

And, even dafter question, what pots do I use? Do I need to invest in expensive earthenware pots, or will plasic ones do the trick?

as far as i know its the same growing seasonfor tubs as for the ground. Could be even better in tubs as you can move to sheltered warmer spots when needed. As for containers I just use what i can i.e. i used to do a lot of tubs with flowers in for the patio now they have veg in. You can even build your own if you can get hold of some old pallets. Spuds will even grow in just a strong black plastic sack filled with compost.

for planting now im going to follow the advice given above.

thanks!

I think we will start off with tatties and carrots, and maybe a wee herb garden. Off to check if these can be done now.

I just use ordinary plastic tubs, milk bottles with the top chopped off anything really. I tend to recycle whatever is  available to plant / grow stuff in.
The rules apply to pot growing as they do ground, but i'm going to attempt carrots, tatties and peas then when it gets too cold out for them either put them in the mini greenhouse thingy or the house itself.

I also cut holes in bottles that you get veg. oil in, one of my neighbours goes though tons of cola bottle and i reuse them for stock chop top off and put a leek in to grow.
Old bin = potato tub
Hanging baskets = strawberries and tomatoes.Right these pictures aren't brilliant because rain started dropping on as i was taking them.

I grow New tats in those spring up garden tidy bins. These bins have a handle each side at the top and a loop each side at the bottom.  so when New tats all harvested I do the following  I put string into the handle and through the loop on either side to make the bin smaller and grow radishes and lettuce in them.

I also use the old blue mushroom boxes that the grocery shelf fillers, in tesco, throw into a cage as rubbish.

To answer the start question as well, I've started off my Winter Hardy white lisbon spring onions - they should be ready early spring.  I have also planted some lettuce and radish don't know how they will do but should at least get some baby leaves from lettuce.  I am on the sunny south coast though.  I think you can grow Autumn King carrots now.  Not certain though as haven't researched the Autumn King.
