Title: best way to store potatoes
Post by: keemjay on September 11, 2007, 10:06
what do you think is the best way to store home grown potatoes? i've never had to before as never had a good/big enough crop. i have a shed which is pretty dark so i could either put them in sacks or just in a box. i wondered about whether air would get to them in a paper sack, and whether air was good or bad. i could use hessian sacks? or are a few shallow boxes/orange crates better so that they're in shallower 'layers'
also should you put some earth in with them to store. i know you shouldnt wash them...
thanks, any opinions gratefully received!

I used to do sacks but now I prefer large wooden boxes with a few air holes side and bottom. They breath a lot easier and keep any missed rotting to a minimum. Keep the boxes in a dark cool place that's free from possible freezing, or you'll lose the lot, whether bagged or boxed.
