Has anyone tried growing mushrooms. Either from kits or from the inoculated dowels that are drilled into logs?

Perhaps surprisingly, given my nickname, I haven't. Though I'd like to try. I'm looking for the thing you make shikktake mushrooms with, maybe a few others. They like rain, so even if we have a washout year, perhaps something for the table?

I have seen mushroom kits on ebay for Oyster and Shiktake mushrooms both for the log and straw bag type. Would be an interesting addition to the table.

I bought one of the mushroom kits from B&Q at Christmas.  Some of my friends say they were okay, but you have to provide an initial temperature of between 20-25oC for the first 10 days which has become a bit problematic for me.  I don't have an airing cupboard/hot water tank where it is warm, so I perched the whole thing over a (warm, not hot!) radiator.  Of course the weather has gone a bit mild now ....

If I am in anyway successful, I'll let you know

A mushroom walked into a really quiet pub. Suddenly the place was alive with people all having a good time, and the mushoom was standing everybody drinks.

One of the customers said "How do you do it? I can never make so many instant friends and enjoy life like this?"

And the mushroom says: "I guess it's because I'm just a funghi........."

Boom Boom.

They're very fickle things, hence the mystery attached to them. They seem to come from nowhere and disappear just as quickly.

When you're growing your own, conditions have to be just right in terms of temperature and humidity. If not spot on, then nothing happens.

How very true! The last sentence more often comes reality than one would wish.

Some of the mushroom dowels can take up to 4 years to produce anything, so hang on in there....I bought some last year & forgot about them, luckily enough they were from T&M & I am working there now, my supervisor said she would replace them for me!!! Result!!!!
