Generator suggestions...
« on: June 01, 2010, 08:40 »
I've just returned from the allotment where its seems the thieving little scrotes have had my genny away. Police informed. Luckily they must've been disturbed aas everyones tools are piled at the end of their plots ready (presumably) to be picked up. Apart from my genny, obviously.

So any suggestions for a cheap genny? Don't need a mega-wattage one, but sufficient to run strimmer, jetwash and such. Last one was a Woolies bargain buy for £40 but I guess I'm gonna have to put my hand in my pocket a little deeper this time!

I assume you mean the little  2 stroke gennies? They are rated at about 650 watts continuos and 800 watts peak outpeak for short periods. They seem to go for about £70 brand new. "Wolf" always seem to be advertising in the sunday papers and have such things - no idea on quality tho

I looked at 2 strokes briefy but I'd need about 1kw continuos and you then seem to jump up to the more expensive 4 strokes.

Sorry to hear of the theft.

Cheers everyone. The Lidl one looks good but a bit expensive for my needs.

I wonder if I could use a decent invertor from the truck and stick in a leisure battery on a split charge. Hmmmm [scratches chin] Then I'm set up wherever I go....

Time to do some thinking me thinks...lol

I use inverters in the caravan. The current draw on the battery is huge. Its only safe for your batery to draw in amps about 10% of the amp hour rating. (ie 100amp hour battery would give about 10amps for a extended time ) 10 amps is 100watts at 240volts.

Frankie

Is this based on simpley drawing from the battery when the engine is NOT running? What if it is running at just tick over?

you can add the current from alternator, which at tick over will be low. May be only 2 or 3 amps which will rise with revs to well over 50 amps
