Onion seeds and Leeks
« on: April 13, 2012, 13:54 »
How big do they need to grow before bring planted out. At present in modules and about five inches high on bedroom window sill
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength

I don't know about onions, but with leeks the idea is to wait until they are pencil thick. They need to be in something deeper than modules though, as they'll be about 6 inches long by then.

Make a hole with a dibber and pop them in, apply water and this will cause the sides of the hole to fall in and cover the leek roots.

"Some say"  to cut back the roots by 1/2 and the leaves by 1/3rd,  but this is subject to argument ! ! !

Cheers,     Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Your leeks look well advanced to me for the time of year - when did you sow these?

You must have some kind of back to the future leeks!!!

Are they inside? You need to harden them off - i sow mine outside with little protection

I tend to not plant mine out until midsummer.
