Leek rust
« on: September 30, 2014, 08:06 »
I seem to have rust on some of my leeks. I know there is no cure for this as in a spray, but do I remove the affected leaves or just leave them on the plants?

I usually take off affected leaves as long as it not too many and give the plants a boost feed with Sulphate of Potash watered in and on the leaves too.

Seems to keep it at bay a bit.

Hope that helps  :)

I did this too and on top of that, when the leaves had dried, I sprayed with a fungicide. I thought it probably wouldn't do any harm and might slow the rust down, but as I only did it last week, I have yet to see whether it works.
According to the RHS, there is no treatment available to us gardeners.

My leeks are still pencil small as they've not been in long, I've noticed on my site the bigger leeks all have rust so I'm assure I'll get it, I'm giving them a weekly weed tea feed

At the first signs of rust , wipe some petroleum jelly over the infected area. It will not kill it but it stops the spores infecting other leaves/plants.

Mine were showing leaves with rust around six weeks ago.  I removed the worst of them,  since then it has been quite dry, I don't know if that helped, but it seems to have stopped spreading altogether.
