Mixed Salad Leaves
« on: April 04, 2009, 09:40 »
I am hoping someone may be able to help, I am going to be growing some mixed salad leaves in window boxes this year. On the packet of seeds it tells me how much space between rows and how deep but not how much room I should allow between each seed.

Is it a case of just trailing them along the window box in one continual row? or should I be more precise for example leave 2cm between each seed?

Any advice most welcome.

Many thanks

Just sprinkle the seeds all over the window box soil. I've done this for several years works for me.

Try my best to be Organic but don't always make it

Just to add the packet should last a couple of sprinkles ;)

That's handy, I have two window boxes and have used half this morning and will sow the remainder in the second box in a couple of weeks.
Thanks for your advice.

I just sprinkle mine, thinly though, as well because after all they are salad leaves not full grown lettuces.  Some years I have sprinkled a bit too close but luckily they didn't suffer.

I generally aim for a plant per square inch, so maybe two seeds in case one fails!  The result is usually that I have too many plants and some of the weaker ones get crowded out, but it seems to work OK.
