Grow Your Own / Royal sovereign strawberries.
« Last post by Wayward_Colonial on Today at 20:42 »
Just wanted to start off saying hey. I'm a gardener from USA. I was hoping yall could help point me in the right direction.

So I've been looking to add a strawberry patch to my garden and in doing some research the Royal sovereign variety seems to be what I want as it's an old cultivar with as if read amazing flavor.
The trouble is that it is impossible to find anyone growing them in US or Canada
And from what I've seen not very many places in the UK sell them. The ones who do sadly don't ship outside UK.

I was wondering why does it seem that such an amazing strawberry has such limited regional and global distribution. Is it particularly hard to grow or is its quality over stated? Or just a nich plant that only some people are interested in?

Sorry for the long winded first post. Hope yall are having a great weekend.

Grow Your Own / Re: Slugs (again)

I’ve just started a major campaign at my plot against slugs which usually devastate my newly planted seedlings. I’ve got a load of old decking boards and flooring planks which I’m laying either side of my beds and keeping damp. The slugs love to hide there during the day when I come up and dispatch them. Early days, but I’m hopeful it should keep them in check.

I don’t see why it would. FB probably have a receptor for a particular chemical that brassica produce and home in on this. This process won’t be affected by putting a strong smell on top. Worth a try though, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

You might have to give a little more information e.g. how long have you had the tree, where it is planted (pot or ground) and so on.

Pictures of the trunk, branches and dead leaves will help as well.

Mine went out today on the plot and the greenhouse ones were potted into their builders buckets.  I’ve had tumblers out in containers for a week or so now and they are growing away like crazy, the weather is predicted to stay as it is - warm, showers, some sun and everything would have needed potted on next week.

I reckoned it was time to go for it  :D

Try it if it is still alive but do sow more. I have yet to sow my out door cucumbers, no point here in west of Scotland untill last week of may even at the earliest. Im amazed people bother with them much earlier here at least, they need warm ground and warm days and nights, .

They got into my greenhouse in late winter and ripped open and devoured a bag of bird seed lol, they are smart and I would assume they wont eat anything that harms them, unlike me lol

Grow Your Own / Withered Cherry Tree

Only just joined this forum.  Can anyone help me identify what's happened to my cherry tree.  There was a lovely blossom about 4 weeks ago and I was looking forward to another bumper year.  Went to the allotment on Monday and the leaves have all turned brown and shrivelled up.

Jacket potato, cheese, coleslaw and corned beef (special request from himself).

Maybe a balanced or even a high nitrogen feed if they are young?  I steer clear of tomato feed until  the plants are much bigger and fruiting.  My young plants don't complain about the odd seaweed and urine cocktail!

I try and give all plants I raise a weekly seaweed feed (if I remember) from about 4-6 weeks after sowing until they get planted out. Especially with the recent compost situation I think this is even more important than previously.
