Dwarf French Beans
« on: May 15, 2008, 18:08 »
I have some 'Tendercrop' dwarf french beans.

The packet says to plant in double rows a foot apart. Each row supports the other.

Does this mean a foot between the double row or do I plant a double row right next to eeach other and then leave a foot between the next double row?

Does that makes sense? I'm having a blonde moment!

PS... Do dwarf varieties produce less pods than climbers? Do I need to plant more of them?

  erm, yes, I have planted mine, about a foot apart and a foot between the row. Oh and yes I believe they produce less than climbers, smaller plant an all.

I grew these last year they're great. They are very short plants with lots of leaves which hid the beans completely. It took me a while to notice they were there! I got masses of beans from mine. I sowed three batches over the summer in well spaced rows. I like the idea of sowing double rows as its easy to reach over the first row and pick behind them.
This year I'm trying undersowing my dwarf beans below taller crops like climbing french beans and peas to save space.

So that's a foot between 2 single rows to make a double.... told you I'm being very blonde tonight!

Do they need any sort of protection, ie fleece or netting?

Only need protection if a frost is forecast.

I'm growing Purple Teepee - pods are purple - oh yes - but they grow above the foiliage and are easy to spot.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
