Tomato plant broken at the base
« on: July 14, 2010, 21:08 »
There was a storm here today and all my tomato plants were left keeling over. So I went at the canes with a hammer to try to drive them deeper into the ground. And as the plants are tied to the cane I ended up braking one stem at the base. It's kind of bent in hanging on by a couple of threads. I'm looking for miracles here but I suppose the only option is to dig up the plant and let the tomatoes ripen on the window sill or in a paper bag. Or isn't it?

It's probably a gonner :(

... but I have a plant which I snapped in the same way about a third of the way up.  I splinted it with a stick and gaffa tape and it's doing fine :)

Same here. Split the main stalk in half down the middle whilst being a bit too heavy handed breaking off a side shoot I'd missed and let grow too big. Tied it in well to a stake and it's doing fine.

It's what I do when any of mine break. They very resilient and will keep growing no matter what.
