How do you clean white stone chips
« on: March 01, 2009, 19:53 »
A question on behalf of my neighbour. She has a south facing flower border which is covered in white shingle, upon which she has a few pots, and through which she has a couple of specimen plants.

Unfortunately the gravel has picked up a greenish tinge over the winter and she wants it pristine again without killing any of the plants. Is there anything that she can spray it with, or will she have to lift it and wash it, and if so then with what?

Any ideas?

Painstakingly!

It'd take a heck of a lot of water and time.

Some thoughts......
If the green is caused by water - which I guess it is - would covering it with a plastic sheet when the temperatures pick up dry it out.... then raking help? ::)

Alternatively I wonder whether a mild solution of Jays Fluid would do the job.
In the right low concentration it should not harm well established plants.

Sorry to be negative but it's going to be an on-going battle -is it worth it? White stones aren't natural for a situation like that
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

If it were me I'd go for grass - looks nice green! :)

you can get a natural product to clean patios and paths, it may work on your stones too.  you sprinkle it on and brush it off patios a few weeks later, you may be able to wash it off once its done its bit.  sorry i dont know the name of it but im sure you can get it in most garden centers.  although i would check the back to see if it is ok with plants.
