Do you not think the first one is a red stemmed dogwood. If it is cut it down low and you will get new red stems growing up which will be good winter interest. If not cut back it will get enormous and stems will not stay red.
It could be an acre but the leaves don't look  right.

I'd agree with forsythia and kerria, but the leaves on the middle one look very small for a mahonia.  Google a piccie for Berberis darwinii and see what you think.  It looks very like it to me  :)
I am going for berberis as well asMahonia has much bigger leaves and agree with the two other ones.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I'm very ignorant  I thought all those pointy leaved ones were either holly or mahonia  :D :D Now I know something new!

There is a small-leaved holly but don't think it's that.

The peony picture (I'm sure that's what it is). The green leaves at the bottom...I have the same, we call it Bishop's weed (not sure why). It's a royal pain in the backside as the roots travel a fair way with leaves sprouting all along the roots. I also have it growing in among peony shoots - hard to get rid of without damaging the shoots  >:(

Another vote for red-stemmed dog wood!

:D depends how brave you feel - ideally yes, but if that idea scares you, either give me the secateurs or cut out a third of the branches right down to the ground and trim the rest back by a third. Then next year you can either chop it all back to get the full benefit of the new stems or repeat and cut out another third - in three years you'll have a new shrub. Give it a good feed after you do the deed though.  These dogwoods will respond to hard pruning, but if you don't you'll still have a quite attractive plant but the red stems in winter are what you are after and they only come after major surgery! If my memory serves me right in the UK you cut it back in late February.

I have several dogwoods with different coloured stems. If you prune new ones down to about a foot, it gives a good framework to allow new branches to grow. You can then prune these the next year almost down to the framework as they will grow again. I have (and just have) pruned mine back in April even when new leaves are just showing and not had a problem. A s said, the current year's new growth is what provides the best coloured stems.
