Over here generally maize is sweetcorn either on the cob harvested as silage, or hulled and dried as animal feed where it is available whole, cut or flaked.

Corn is used as an umbrella  name for cereals (wheat, oats, barley etc.)

Thanks guys, that's the main reason I asked is that I could understand better.

I know it just gripes me that feed is so high when the cost of grain has went into the celler! Wheat was 15 dollars a bushel at harvest time and now it's down to around four but did feed prices drop? No they didn't so I am going to check out alternate sources like whole grains ran through a home grist mill and then made into a wet mash. But I hate to think the time that will take every day as I have many seperate pens of show birds.

Can't imagine I will ever have the energy or time to mix my own feed but I sometimes look at the recipes in the back of the book I have and wonder if it would be worth while.

Who am I kidding?! I barely cook for myself half the time during the week. My cats go tmy tea yeaterday as I had forgotten to buy cat food on the way hame!
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

I mixed my own feed for a batch of chunkey chicks a few years back ...

equal parts of ...

maize meal, soya bean meal, whole wheat, and barley meal. I fed it as a damp mash and they done fantastic on it.

My wife says I need to do more ... but like you its hard to get time to do everything. Though if times get any harder I might just have to.

Cheers

 :)
