Title: Dahlias
Post by: Jamie Butterworth on September 09, 2011, 16:46
A flower that I have never grown before, and dont realy know much about, as in how to grow it, plant it, maintain it, everything realy.

So can someone give me a little bit of advice on when to buy and plant the tubers, growing them, specific growing requirments, anything that might be useful to get a realy good display of dahlias?

 :)

Have you done a forum search for the posts by Yabba, Jamie?  What he didn't know wasn't worth knowing ...  :)

Nope, but I will do, it was actually the commemerative competition in honour of Yabba that inspired me to try growing some :)

Thanks for the help :)

The tubers will be in the shops in the new year Jamie if you want the best choice, but most people find they have to lift the tubers each autumn and store them in a frost free place for the winter.  Some round my area who garden on sandy soil leave them in year round and get away with it.

The more simple single flowered ones can be grown from seed each year and these are cheap and very easy to grow.  I grew a mix called Bishop's Children one year and they were lovely, so you could give them a go  :)
