describes what I feel for the International Kidney potato.  I love it so much, I don't want to grow anything else, and I want to extend the season beyond the standard first early season.  Does anyone know if I can stagger the planting, and maybe keep harvesting them through to autumn?

I was quite frankly disappointed with the flavour, compared to the genuine "Jersey Royal", when I grew them a few years back.

Didn't bother again, for some reason I don't think my soil's the quality it is in Jersey.   Must be all that seeweed!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yes Kidneys can be grown later on in the season.
They can be classed as a maincrop as well as an early.

Funnily enough I'm planting my Jersey Royals tomorrow on my southwest facing cotil.  (A cotil is a sloping plot).  That's one advantage of living over here.  Ntsure when you could plant them in the UK.  I just hope we don't have any more air frost after mid february!

Wouldn't grown IK again if you paid me.  Had read that they were the same as Jerseys.  The outside turned to mush and the inside stayed like a bullet.  What a waste of money.Sorry.

Sadly, I'm with DD & Wighty, dissapointed.
But we are growing them again on the second plot. Second chance

It was the same with 'Golden Wonder'

The French have a term 'terrior' - kind of the the place, the soil, the weather etc, it can't be replecated else where in the world.

Hence, Burgundy,  from the Cote D'or. Heaven in a bottle.
Elsewhere just plain old 'Chardonnay'

Hmm wouldn't mind trying both for comparison now ;) Who sells Jersey Royal though?
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

I think you've missed the point!

To all intents and purposes they are the same seed spud, but you can only grow Jersey Royals in the soil on the Island of Jersey!

I had the same probs as Senrab last year from IK we grew at my volunteer horticulture place, and the ones that dodnt fall apart tasted 'gritty'. I would never grow them myself.

Aah!  Interesting replies.  Funnily enough, all my spuds from last year fell apart on cooking - I didn-t try the International Kidneys then - but had to keep resorting to buying the Jersey Royals in the shops.  Maybe the soil on my plot won't suit them either.  I'll give it a go tho.  Alex - very interesting about the wine - now I vaguely recall a TV programme which was saying just that.  Even adjacent vineyards can produce a wine of entirely different taste with the same grapes.

Sorry, I got the impression from your original post that you were in love with the ones you'd grown!

I grew them a few years ago too, along with a few mates of mine and we  all ended up completely floury spuds and nothing like what we expected.

So now I just grow "Nicola" always really waxy and tasty no matter what the weather's like.

My favourite new spud by a mile. :D
