I hate flimsy inserts, I cause so much disruption to the plant I am trying to get out I am sure it sets it back

I now use a more rigid (reusable) type but cam considering just cutting up some Blue waterpipe (into, say, 1" lengths) and using that - it will avoid me being constrained to a "whole tray full" of anything.

However, that might all be irrelevant! what are you planning to use yours for?

You have missed it but end of season in Wilkingson they are sold off as cheap as chips

Thanks Cad, I'll keep an eye out for next year.  I'm planing to use them for flowers seeds and probably some veg.  I have some from plants I've bought and found them really easy to use (dexterity not what it used to be) so before I buy some more, I wanted to check out prices.

My local garden centre has a "bin" for people to put their throw-away pots and modules in, and encourages people to help themselves.  If yours does too?? then you might find what you want for free?

I use toilet roll tubes and plant the whole thing at transplant time to avoid root disturbance.

But you know what?
£2.99 isn't a bad price and if you've something to go in now, I'd just pay the money and have done.
You could faff about looking for cheaper and murphy's law says they'll be a freak snowstorm or local emergency that prevents you from gardening for the next 10 weeks!
