Growing Rice
« on: June 08, 2012, 08:47 »
Any tips?
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

First test the germination rate, then sow in warm damp ground......

....... pull up in bundles and then plant out in flooded fields about foot apart either way

Look out for water buffalo  ;)

What you need is an "upland" rice variety, which grows on dry land just like wheat etc.
I have been unable to find a supplier for it unless you want loads!
I think they tend to be consumed locally as well so you cant just get a bag of brown rice to use as seed.
I looked into it a while ago because I was looking at becoming self sufficient, I decided in the end just to "trade" for the stuff I couldn't grow.
I did think about trying regular rice, just to see if it would grow, but never did.
Hope this helps a bit.

Given the current weather, I'd skip the hat.  We might never see you again if a gust catches you   ;)

Can you chit rice?? :tongue2: (no rude jokes intended!)

It's almost worth a try with a box of wild rice from the deli??  Let's face it, there has been a world rice shortage recently.  Shall we start a paddy field trial?

xx
Anyone else thinking of growing rice this season?
