Can anyone recommend a good, robust cordless strimmer please as my petrol version is on its last legs and I have quite a large area to cut down prior to cultivation?

Although I don't have a specific recommendation, one comment I'd make is to ensure you have a lithium iron battery which has some substance to it.

Although we had a Bosch cordless for some years, I've noticed Black and Decker have really upped their game on their products, so it might be worth a quick visit to a B and Q or similar!

Like lots of garden tools, if it feels OK and looks OK, and doesn't look 'cheap', it probably is OK! But as Yorkie says, it has to be  Li-ion battery nowadays!

Ta, will pop out to B and Q and have a look at the Li-ion ones. Shame really, but I won't miss the starting problems, fumes, noise and smell of my trusty petrol version

You might miss the ooomph if you're strimming more than grass, I have corded and petrol and have to resort to the petrol if I don't keep on top of things.

I have a Dewalt strimmer that retails at around £200 which is very good.  It copes with long grass and nettles on the bank next to my plot and is way more powerful than most domestic models.  You can also adjust from normal speed to maximum if tackling rough growth.

If you have a large area to do, you will need to do it in stages as the battery will go, but it recharges very fast.   After the initial charge at the start of the season, I find mine recharges in about 30 minutes.
